Classification of Coastal Arctic Land Cover by Means of Terrasar-x Dual Co-polarized Data

چکیده
Arctic coastal regions are threatened by changing climatic conditions and anthropogenic disturbances. Since SAR systems operate independently from external illumination and are not affected by cloud shadowing, they are suitable for continuous monitoring of pan-arctic environments. In this work we show the application of dual co-polarized (HH/VV) TerraSAR-X (TSX) data for unsupervised water and land cover classification by means of Kennaugh Matrix, TwoComponent Dualpol, and Alternative Entropy Alpha Dualpol Decomposition. Classification of both water and land is derived by means of iterative unsupervised classifiers. Overall accuracy achieved for water was approximately 94 % and 74% for examined basic land cover types within the Mackenzie Delta Region, Canadian Western Arctic.

Enhancing land use classification with fusing dual-polarized TerraSAR-X and multispectral RapidEye data
The contribution of dual-polarized synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to optical data for the accuracy of land use classification is investigated. For this purpose, different image fusion algorithms are implemented to achieve spatially improved images while preserving the spectral information. To compare the performance of the fusion techniques, both the microwave X-band dual-polarized TerraSAR-X d...
متن کاملMonitoring of the Lac Bam Wetland Extent Using Dual-Polarized X-Band SAR Data
Wetlands in semi-arid Africa are vital as water resource for local inhabitants and for biodiversity, but they are prone to strong seasonal fluctuations. Lac Bam is the largest natural freshwater lake in Burkina Faso, its water is mixed with patches of floating or flooded vegetation, and very turbid and sediment-rich. These characteristics as well as the usual cloud cover during the rainy season...
متن کاملTwo Component Decomposition of Dual Polarimetric HH/VV SAR Data: Case Study for the Tundra Environment of the Mackenzie Delta Region, Canada
This study investigates a two component decomposition technique for HH/VV-polarized PolSAR (Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar) data. The approach is a straight forward adaption of the Yamaguchi decomposition and decomposes the data into two scattering contributions: surface and double bounce under the assumption of a negligible vegetation scattering component in Tundra environments. The dep...
متن کاملMulti-Temporal Land-Cover Classification of Agricultural Areas in Two European Regions with High Resolution Spotlight TerraSAR-X Data
Functioning ecosystems offer multiple services for human well-being (e.g., food, freshwater, fiber). Agriculture provides several of these services but also can cause negative impacts. Thus, it is essential to derive up-to-date information about agricultural land use and its change. This paper describes the multi-temporal classification of agricultural land use based on high resolution spotligh...

Earth Observation (EO) data plays a major role in supporting surveying compliance of several multilateral environmental treaties, such as UN-REDD+ (United Nations Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation). In this context, land cover maps of remote sensing data are the most commonly used EO products and development of adequate classification strategies is an ongoing research topic....
